Bridges

Bernard Carabello pioneered the deinstitutionalization movement in the 1970s with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Geraldo Rivera. As a former resident of New York State's Willowbrook Institution, he discusses his experiences and explores some of the reasons why this infamous hospital became the catalyst for transitioning individuals with disabilities out of institutions and into small community settings like group homes, supported living etc in the 1970's and 1980's.

Bridges would like to invite the disability community to share your experiences with us. We all have a story to tell and, as the years go by, these stories take on an extra poignancy. Many of our older families have a story to tell about life before there were services for individuals with disabilities. There are folks that have lived in institutions most of their lives but who, like Bernard, found a new life in the community. There are stories of great joy, of sorrow and of inspiration. There are extraordinary people doing routine things every day within our disability community and they all have a story to tell. Will you share your story with us?

Please click on the e-mail address below and write your story. You can be anonymous if you wish. It is our hope that we can eventually publish a keepsake of our collective efforts that might serve as a treasured memory for everyone.
